Claude for Non-Developers: Complete Beginner Guide

Start from zero. Install Claude Code, build a workspace, and run your first commands. For non-technical users who have never opened a terminal.

What is a terminal?

A terminal is a text window where you type commands to your computer. Instead of clicking buttons and icons, you type words and press Enter. Your computer does what you asked.

Install Node.js

Claude Code runs on something called Node.js. You don't need to know what Node.js does. You just need to install it before Claude Code can work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to learn programming?

No. You type commands in plain English. The workspace handles the technical parts.

Do I need a paid Claude plan?

Yes. Claude Code is part of the Pro, Teams, and Max plans. The free plan does not include it. Upgrade at claude.ai before installing if you don't have a paid plan yet.

What's the difference between Claude and Claude Code?

Claude is the AI model, the thing you talk to in the browser or Desktop app. Claude Code is a tool that lets Claude run on your computer with access to your files, your tools, and a workspace. Same AI, much more capability.

Can I use the Desktop app instead of the terminal?

Yes. Co-work mode in the Desktop app gives you most workspace features in a graphical interface. The terminal gives you the full capability. Both are valid starting points.

What if I break something?

You won't break your computer by using Claude Code. The worst thing that happens is you see an error message. Read it, fix it, keep going.
